Animal Care & Feeding

You mention that the cattle graze on pastures and locally grown hay and grains. Are the grains organic? What is the quality of grains?
Because food justice(offering our products at prices that the greatest number of people can afford) and sustainability(sourcing from the nearest supplier with the least amount of fuel for transport) are important to us, we purchase conventionally raised grains from our neighbors.  We try to source GMO free grains, however; this has been a challenge as we are a small farm without significant grain storage facilities. Currently, there is not a separate market for GMO-free grains, so farmers do not store them separately. T
We are happy to say that in the spring of 2009 we contracted with the pork producer/grain farmer that we work with to purchase GMO-free corn for our pig and chicken feeds. We got our first load in late December. He will be feeding his hogs with this corn as well. When demand exceeds our pork production, we purchase hogs from him, so they will be eating GMO-free corn as well

Are your animals ever administered hormones or antibiotics?
All of our animals are raised with out drugs, hormones, or antibiotics.

If an animal gets acutely sick or injured, we will treat it with appropriate medications. In seven years of farming, we've needed to administer penicillin, once, for our milk cow that got a severe uterine infection following a difficult twin birthing. Any meat animals (none to date) animals that require treatment will be diverted to the commodity market after the proper withdrawl period.
